UPDATES AND COMMISERATIONS
Dr Murphy received an invitation to attend the annual BioHorizons seminar in Dubai and is disappointed to be unavailable for this due to family commitments over Easter. We continue to have resounding success with their Laser Lok implants and they have proven to give extremely predictable and aesthetic results. The gums seem to settle very well around the neck of the implant which makes implant restoration design and fabrication so much easier for the dentist and implant crown laboratory.
Rebecca continues to make excellent progress with her Six Month Smiles braces and we have provisionally scheduled the ‘braces off’ appointment for the end of this month (April).
Dr Murphy has been speaking to Scotland international Steven Naismith about his regular Summer visit to the practice. Steven has enjoyed some excellent performances in the Premiership recently, including a Man of the Match and goal against Arsenal at the weekend.
Commiserations must go to our friends at Braehead Clan who narrowly missed out on a Play-Off Final place, losing out in the semifinal. Mario Larocque, a regular at Appletree Dental Care this season, suffered an injury which proved to be the match’s turning point. Another Appletree patient Ed McGrane managed a goal to secure a third place playoff win v Fife Flyers. This is the highest ever position for a Scottish team in the Elite league. Well done Clan on a great season, from all at Appletree Dental Care.
CONGRATULATIONS BRAEHEAD CLAN
Appletree Dental Care would like to congratulate Braehead Clan on becoming the first Scottish ice hockey team to make the Elite League play-off finals. We are proud to sponsor local sports and delighted to have been witness to such a successful season for ‘Clan.’ Matt Towe (left) has had his most prolific season with 17 goals to date. Lee Ester (right) also paid us a visit, leaving Nottingham (where they had beaten Panthers 9-1 on aggregate), at 6am to make their lunchtime appointments at Appletree! Well done lads and good luck in the Play-offs this weekend.
BRAEHEAD CLAN SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
We would like to offer best wishes to the Braehead Clan Supporters Association for their upcoming fundraiser.
Our favourite Ice Hockey team continue to thrive in the UK Elite League and currently sit in 4th place. Appletree Dental Care have offered a free course of tooth whitening to be submitted for silent auction. We wish the “The Clan” all the best for their final games this season.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTIE & REBECCA
Two members of staff celebrate birthdays this week. They are our most youthful workers: Christie, who helps with marketing both surgeries, is 17; Rebecca, a qualified Dental Nurse, is 19 and has taken some well earned time off to celebrate. Happy Birthday to them!
Also, patients should be aware that our hygienist has dropped her Thursdays in favour of Saturday appointments from 9am-4pm.
APPLETREE DENTAL CARE AND BRAEHEAD CLAN: A NEW ASSOCIATION FOR 2014
Lights Camera Action
I have pleasure in announcing that Appletree Dental Care have sealed an agreement with Braehead Clan Ice Hockey team to look after the dental needs of players and staff.
It’s great to form a professional association with ‘The Clan’ who sit joint second in the UK Elite league and play their home matches at Braehead Arena on the other side of the Clyde Tunnel. Dr Murphy thoroughly enjoyed his first home match on Saturday night but was disappointed in the result: a 2-3 reverse with Sheffield Steelers………
“The saving grace is the wonderful atmosphere in the arena – very family friendly. I’m delighted to be involved with Braehead Clan who are obviously very keen to look after the dental needs of their players. The staff at Appletree Dental Care will provide regular dental care for the players in accordance with the agreement with Braehead Clan. The full range of cosmetic treatments will be an optional consideration over and above their dental health which naturally comes first. We welcome all those associated with the Clan to our practice in Glasgow’s West End (dentistglasgow.com for further contact details) and wish them a successful finish to the Elite League season.”
In terms of the players: the nature of their sport lends itself to trauma and it’s important that we protect them from that as best we can. Advice on routine dental health issues as well as things like oral cancer (increased risks in Scottish men from 40-65), the effect of sports drinks on teeth and the links between gum disease and strokes/diabetes/heart disease: these are some of the areas that we can advise athletes on. We look forward to seeing Clan players, fans and friends at the practice in 2014.
DR MURPHY AND BIOHORIZONS
Dr Murphy returned from an international conference on implantology in Germany where he was a guest of BioHorizons. Dr murphy would like to thank BioHorizons, an American implant company, for their hospitality at the conference and looks forward to further success with their products. Although only 18 months into his relationship with the company, dr murphy has reported encouraging feedback on their results, with no failures as of yet. The laserlok technology and gentle preparation during placement seem to have fantastic effect on the integration of the implants with bone. Patients interested in dental implants should call 01413391961 for their free consultation.
CHARITY DONATIONS 2013: ‘LOAVES AND FISHES.’
In an effort to raise some money for a charitable cause, Appletree Dental Care has decided to donate money from new patient consultations at the Crow Rd Clinic to the Glasgow based charity ‘Loaves and Fishes.’ We have spoken with Dr Brendan Murphy, to find out why this charity was chosen and the motives for fund raising.
Q.How will the money be raised?
A.”Normally, we might charge a £25 consultation fee for new patients. In waiving that charge we have decided to appeal to patients’ good nature and request a donation to a worthy cause. Money will be given only on the basis of what people can afford; a voluntary arrangement from which only good things can come.”
Q. What was the stimulus for fund raising?
A. “Perhaps it was a New Years’ resolution. Although we have done a number of things to help worthy causes over a period of time, from children’s football to Meningitis Association Scotland/Downs Syndrome Scotland, we needed to do something more consistently. Previous efforts were on an ‘ad hoc’ basis or at the request of philanthropic patients and friends. We wanted to make our patients aware of the charity at a time when many people are struggling.”
Q.Are there any other reasons that ‘Loaves and Fishes’ were your chosen charity?
A.”On a recent visit to the Clinic, the Everton and Scotland footballer Steven Naismith mentioned that he had been involved with ‘Loaves and Fishes.’ I was aware of a Christmas dinner he helped organise for homeless people approximately one year ago and it’s a Glasgow based charity for local people in need. Most people like the idea that charity “begins at home.” Having studied and worked in the Glasgow area for all of my professional life it seemed like a good choice.”
Appletree Dental Care look forward to raising funds for ‘Loaves and Fishes’ throughout 2013.
SCOTLAND FOOTBALLER VISITS APPLETREE DENTAL CLINIC
Whilst up seeing family over New Year, Everton and Scotland player Steven Naismith paid a visit to the Appletree dental Clinic in Glasgow’s West end. We asked Steven a few questions…..
Q. What changed you mind?
A. “Dr Murphy explained that there was a new way of treating minor cases of crowding that involved ‘metal free’ braces and no extractions. He did explain that he couldn’t completely fix my bite which had caused me to grind my front teeth down but I wasn’t worried about that. At the end of the treatment he fixed my chipped front teeth without any drilling or injections. He bonded some resin onto them and the results were incredible.”
Q.How are you enjoying your football in Liverpool and what made you come in to see Dr Murphy?
A. “It’s been very hectic but I’m really enjoying my football right now and playing in the Premiership is a big challenge. It’s not easy to get in to see Dr Murphy under these circumstances but the staff have been great in terms of fitting me in for appointments. A check-up was the main priority.”
Q. How did you find your treatment here?
A. “Dr Murphy advised me to see Laura, the hygienist at the West End Clinic, who was very good. She carried out a very thorough clean and gave me advice on flossing. My teeth felt great when I walked out after that appointment and I was really pleased that I was given a clean bill of health.”
Q.Are there any cosmetic treatments that might interest you?
A.”Dr Murphy had done some tooth whitening for me last year and the results were fantastic. I noticed that my teeth were slowly going a little bit darker since then and he checked my gumshields before supplying me with some new gels.”
Q. When will we see you again at the Clinic?
A. “Realistically it will be at the end of the season but I’m determined to keep on top of things and get in for regular check ups.”
Thanks once again for taking the time to answer our questions Steven. The staff at Appletree dental would like to wish you well for the second half of the season
