Dark Front Tooth Covered with Porcelain Dental Crown

Conscious of her dark front tooth, Charlene from Motherwell came to see us with a root-treated central incisor which had become progressively darker as the months went by.

Charlene had experienced a dental trauma as a child and her front tooth had become painful.

Dark Front Tooth

Quite a few patients come to our Glasgow practice complaining of a dark front tooth. This often happens when the nerve is irreversibly damaged. And like many patients Charlene felt the answer lay in cosmetic dentistry.
After a thorough examination of the tooth we drew up a mutually agreed treatment plan.

Her front tooth was too dark for a porcelain veneer and the tooth was subsequently prepared for a dental crown in pressed porcelain.

Approximately 1mm of dentine is reduced circumferentially to provide sufficient room for opaque and translucent porcelain layers.

As regular readers of our case studies will know, our very experienced and expert porcelain ceramist is called in at this point. His job is to establish the correct translucency and shading for the final crown to match the patient’s own teeth.

In the meantime we placed a temporary crown over the area.

Dental Crown Fitted

We fitted the final dental crown ten days after these adjustments were made.

Porcelain is made to fit snugly around gum margins and matches shading in the upper and lower front teeth. Again this is great credit to the work of the dental laboratory.

Note: Unhappy with a Dark Front Tooth

This is another example of where a patient presented with an issue where an unsightly tooth made her feel self-conscious. Cosmetic dentistry has a part to play not just in the repair or replacement of damaged teeth but also in helping patients feel more confident about their smile and the overall look of their teeth. There is little point in enduring a situation such a badly darkened front tooth when a relatively simple dental procedure can solve the problem for you.

Of course there are other causes of dental discolouration besides route damage and we will cover more of them in these dental case studies.

If you would like to know more about dental crowns explore our cosmetic dentistry pages. And remember there is dental finance available to help spread the cost.
